Politricks and such

mood: blahblah

President Obama gave a good speech for the SOTU. Or at least the parts I heard were sound. A little sick of politics right now so I went between variations of tuning in and tuning out, but the optics were the most striking:

1. Justice Alito (I think) shaking his head vigorously when the pres called out the court for the recent campaign finance ruling.

2. Nancy Pelosi getting notes passed to her and I'm thinking - 1) What does she need to know right now? And 2) Who is the sister sitting next to her? Have never really seen a person sitting beside the speaker before, but then again it's been 8 years since I watched an entire SOTU address. Couldn't take watching Bush's glib talk about Umerica and the terriers who wanted our freedoms.

3. Watching senators like Evan Bayh, whom I find incredibly conniving and gutless, standing up cheering and smiling as he is one of the main leaders walking away from healthcare and railing against ending the filibuster. Mitch McConnell's turtle-ish visage and the way that the republican side is overwhelmingly white and male, I realize that I actually hate politics and president Obama is the only reason I'm watching this ish.

4. Finally, the republican response - the VA governor was flanked by an Asian man and a black woman. I read an earlier story that only republicans had been invited to his speech and once word got out about that, his staff went into panic mode inviting folks at the last minute. Not that these two people couldn't be republicans . . .

All the world is a stage.

ETA: And this is why I'm glad I kindly turned off my TV after the speech. This observation about the optics of the speech comes to us courtesy of Chris Matthews:

"You know, I was trying to think about who he was tonight. and it is interesting. He's post-racial by all appearances. I forgot he was black tonight for an hour. He has gone a long way to become a leader of this country and passed so much history in a year or two, something we don't think about. I was watching and said, "Wait a minute, he is an African-American guy in front of a bunch of other white people."

What the hell?!

I have a theory that there is a nigra provider on standby. Otherwise, how would all the White politicians (and Scott Baio!) be able to trot out the nigras on demand in a crisis?

_____ said _____. Call the nigras.

_______ needs a Black flank. Call the nigras.

PHOTO OP! Trot out the nigras!
